The Foundation of My Practice

The Foundation of My Practice
Every practitioner builds their work on a different foundation, shaped by their own experiences, insights, and intuition. There is no single correct framework here; what follows is simply the lens through which I view and ground my own path.
My practice is anchored in the rhythm of the Moon and the raw power of the elements—Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Rather than treating the elements as tools to "command" or master, I see them as forces infinitely more powerful than any of us.
When we work against them—treating them as mere utilities to be forced—we encounter a sobering reality: these forces possess the raw capability to end our lives if respected carelessly. But when we work with them, aligning our energy with their currents, we invite real, structural change into our lives.
Here is how those elements manifest in my own understanding and traditions.
Earth: The Weight of Matter
* Destructive Capacity: Earthquakes, landslides, cataclysms, crushing weight, suffocation.
* Historical Warning: During the mid-19th-century California Gold Rush, excessive hydraulic mining in the Sierra Nevada foothills used high-pressure water cannons to blast away hillsides. Entire ecosystems were altered, millions of yards of sediment choked river systems, and the result was a cascade of catastrophic, recurring valley floods and agricultural ruin. The earth does not absorb human disruption without consequence.
* Amplification: Structure, endurance, material manifestation, abundance, physical foundation.
* Historical Working:
○ Ancient Greece, c. 600 BCE: Digging ritual trenches (bothroi) to pour honey, milk, and animal blood directly into the earth to commune with the dead and underworld deities.
○ Iron Age Celtic Britain, ~500 BCE - 43 CE: Setting boundary stones and burying iron tokens for homestead protection.
○ Greco-Roman Mediterranean, 5th Century BCE - 4th Century CE: Carving and burying lead curse tablets (defixiones) into graves or sacred earth pits to petition subterranean spirits for binding and justice.
* Core Belief: The ultimate archetype of matter and mortality - sustained by the dust, yet subject to the finality of gravity.
Air: The Unseen Current
* Destructive Capacity: Hurricanes, gales, tornadoes, structural pressure drops.
* Historical Warning: The infamous structural failure of the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge ("Galloping Gertie") in 1940. Engineers neglected aerodynamic flutter and torsional wind resonance, assuming rigid steel could brute-force its way through atmospheric currents. Instead, the bridge twisted apart and collapsed into the strait. Air bends what refuses to yield.
* Amplification: Intellect, clarity, breath, swift movement, communication, unseen currents.
* Historical Working:
○ Traditional cunning-folk and wind-traders, rural coastal Scotland, 16th -17th Century CE: Directional wind invocations and weather-shaping rites performed by local practitioners.
* Ancient Egyptian temple priesthoods, Thebes, c. 1400 BCE: Sacred fumigation and aromatic herb burning for trance induction and spirit communication.
* Core Belief: The breath of the cosmos (anima/pneuma) - governing both life-giving inspiration and the volatile fury of storms.
Fire: The Divine Forge
* Destructive Capacity: Wildfires, scorch storms, complete and instant incineration.
* Historical Warning: The Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Exacerbated by rapid, unchecked urban growth and wood-heavy industrial infrastructure built without respect for natural fire behavior during a severe drought, it incinerated four square miles, left over 100,000 people homeless, and exposed the cost of treating fire as a tool to be dominated rather than a wild force to be safely contained.
* Amplification: Transformation, passion, courage, will, the spark of creation.
* Historical Working:
○ Roman Republic, Temple of Vesta, Rome, c. 700 BCE–394 CE: Maintaining the perpetual communal hearth flame tended by sacred priestesses.
○ Pre-Christian Germanic and Norse pagan traditions, Scandinavia, mid-1st Millennium CE: Seasonal solar bonfire festivals and smoke-consecration rites.
○ Core Belief: The dual-natured divine forge - the sacred hearth that sustains civilization, and the wrathful consumer that reduces empires to ash.
Water: The Primordial Abyss
* Destructive Capacity: Floods, tsunamis, torrential storms, drowning, silent erosion.
* Historical Warning: The disastrous mismanaged construction of the Banqiao Dam in Henan, China (1975). Built under the hubris of engineering complete control over regional floodwaters, the structure catastrophically failed during Typhoon Nina, unleashing a wall of water that killed tens of thousands instantly and devastated millions of lives.
* Amplification: Intuition, emotional depth, cleansing, healing, fluid adaptability.
* Historical Working:
○ Celtic and Romano-British sacred thermal springs, Bath, England, 1st Century CE: Spring water and well scrying rites.
○ India, banks of the Indus and Ganges rivers, c. 1500 BCE: Ritual purification and immersion baths in sacred rivers.
○ Core Belief: The primordial abyss and the great dissolver - representing the volatile depths of emotion and the threat of the deep.
Spirit / Aether
* While I personally recognize Spirit in an entirely different classification than the four physical elements, I respect that many traditions view it as a fifth element within the same framework; therefore, I have outlined it here in a similar manner.
* Destructive Capacity: Spiritual dissociation, profound nihilism, loss of physical anchor.
* Historical Warning: The Salem Witch Trials, Massachusetts Bay Colony (1692 CE). This historical collapse of community safety saw religious and political authorities weaponize absolute spiritual dogma to control communities, resulting in mass paranoia, torture, and judicial slaughter that fractured the social and spiritual fabric of entire regions.
* Amplification: Unifying consciousness, unseen tether, transcendent bridge of intent.
* Historical Working:
○ Late Medieval and Renaissance Hermeticism, Western Europe, 15th -16th Century CE: Sacred geometry and protective circle casting to anchor celestial forces into physical space.
○ Siberian and Tungusic shamanic cultures, Central Asia, pre-history to modern era: Communal trance induction via rhythmic soundscapes for social cohesion and ancestral connection.
○ West African Griot traditions, Mali Empire, 13th Century CE: Lineage storytelling and oral myth-mapping.
○ Plains Native American traditions, North American Great Plains, pre-colonial eras: Vision quests and solitary liminal threshold rites for spirit tethering.
○ Core Belief: The incorruptible witness - the inner observer that navigates the physical vessel without being consumed by it.
Moving Forward
This is simply the language and framework I use to ground my work and honor the natural world around me. Every path is unique, and finding the perspective that resonates with your own craft is what makes the work meaningful.
